Jake Edgley has been developing since 2004 when he bought his first site in Islington, north London.

His five-person practice, Edgley Design specialises in one-off private houses, work he describes as immensely satisfying, but says it is not profitable enough to sustain the office on its own. Development continues to be a way of increasing the practice’s profitability without having to take on more staff.

He says: “There's nothing quite like standing on a site that you've just bought and that’s still what motivates me now."

The series is aimed at architects who would like to know more about the opportunities and challenges around being an independent developer, including spotting creative solutions that a non-architect developer will often miss.

Amanda Baillieu and Gus Zogolovitch set up Developer Collective in 2018 to teach professionals how to become design-led property developers and give them the contacts and resources to deliver their projects. Their book How to be an Architect Developer was published in September '23.

The talk will be followed by networking drinks and nibbles.

This event is supported by Land Tech and The Building Society.
